The Genie Out of the Vat eBook Eric Flint Dave Freer Reviews
This short story opens the series of war on a human colony world where due to an alien invasion, rats, bats, and elephant shrews are "uplifted" to help fight. The humans have resorted to cloning and using the animals genetically enhanced and intellectually uplifted using a special alien chip implanted in their brains. The comedy ensues when the scientists in charge of the animal's development use Shakespeare and other unusual sources to implant the language and behavior portions of their minds.
This one starts it all and the whole series is an excellent trip into one of Eric Flint's crazy Sci/Fi worlds.
Notice I paid for this book through the KU program.
Well, they aren't RATS, really. They are uplifted elephant shrews. The humans need soldiers, FAST, because the nasty insect Maggots are on the way. Now, even though the planet of Harmony and Reason was settled by a bunch of pie-in-the-sky do-gooders, not all of them had banana cream pie for brains. There are some rather accomplished geneticist types, who are given the job of creating fighters out of animal material. They aren't JUST science oriented, though; and, to give their charges that little bit of extra OOMPH they may need, they pre-load them with the works of Shakespeare and Gilbert and Sullivan. Excellent killers, yes. Soldiers? Not so much.
And enter the young and astoundingly naive, overwhelmingly wealthy Conrad Fitzhugh, known to his friends as Fitz. He is a good fellow, and certainly not stupid; just absolutely without the slightest understanding of the way things work. His upbringing as one of the super-rich gave him no real opportunity to learn through bitter experience. How could it, when anything bitter is sugar-coated, caramelized, and flavored with vanilla?
He's particularly stupid about his girl friend, and it almost costs him his life.
The story has action, Fitz grows up, and the good guys win. HOWEVER!!! The absolute best part of the story is the punning conversations carried on without mercy by the elevated Rats. You have to read them to believe them.
The second story included, Crawlspace, is a police procedural murder mystery, also featuring the Uplifted. In this story, however, the cast includes bats, who have been given Irish personalities, complete with labor agitation built in. Honestly, the conversations are so funny that I had to go back and re-read the ending to remember who did what and how and why. It's one of those books where the end isn't nearly as important as getting there.
It's not that I don't like David Brin's uplift series. I love it. But Flint and Freer's warped sense of humor put us in a VERY different universe where the uplift process is, well, "different."
I love this series.
Fine
A really good book but we're is the rest of it. I guess I will have to look very hard and Truro find it.
The precursor to the world of 'Rats Bats and Vats' with more of David Freer's and Eric Flint's delightful humor.
A really good snicker of a book
Very enjoyable story that is a prequel to the Rats, Bats and Vats book telling the story of one of the supporting characters of RB&V. I've loved all 3 of the Vats books and can heartily recommend them. The tone is humerous.
